US badge research at Zerzevan Fortress

A badge with the founding symbols of the USA was found in the Zerzevan Castle, where excavations have been ongoing for seven years in the Çınar district of Diyarbakır.

They were stating that investigations are continuing on how the badge came to the region, Head of Excavation Assoc. Dr. Aytaç Coşkun said, “After the analysis, it was understood that the technology after the 15th century was used in the production of the badge. In addition, archaeometry analyzes show that the rosette remained under the ground for approximately 250-300 years.”

A badge was found in Zerzevan Castle, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The badge drew attention with the founding symbols of the USA on it. Many artefacts such as the Roman Mithras temple, defence tower, church, administration building, residences, grain and weapon warehouses, shelters, rock tombs, and water channels have been unearthed in the region so far. Scientific analyzes were carried out on the rosette located 125 cm below the ground, on the eastern part of the walls at the entrance of Zerzevan Castle. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the badge remained under the ground for about 250-300 years. Excavation Director and Dicle University Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. Aytaç Coşkun said that the Latin word ‘E Pluribus Unum’ (one that consists of a plurality/unity from a plurality) is written on the badge.

Emphasizing that the symbol dates back to the founding years of the USA, Coşkun said, “We saw that the motif is the founding symbol of America. We were thinking of badges or buttons. The coat of arms on it is the founding symbol of America. America was founded in 1776. A similar motif was drawn in 1782. It has the inscription ‘E Pluribus Unum’ in Latin. “It was America’s first official slogan,” he said.

“We searched for similar ones, when we looked at similar ones, it was the 1850s when buttons or symbols similar to this were used for the first time in America, and they were used as buttons on soldiers’ uniforms,” said Coşkun. “The motif on the badge started to be produced in America in 1902. It is used as a button on soldiers’ uniforms in the First World War in 1914, after 1902,” he said.

Stating that the investigations are continuing, Coşkun said that after the completion of the works, the badge can be exhibited in the museum.
