We had a pleasant conversation with Swiss artist Jana Schafroth about her art life. You can read this interview in both English and German.
–Hi Jana. We would like to get to know you. Can you tell us about yourself?
First of all I would like to thank you very much for the invitation to this interview. My name is Jana Schafroth I am a Swiss artist living near Zurich. I paint, illustrate and lead painting events outside in nature on the pasture with alpacas.
–When and how did you start painting?
I draw and paint since I was a child. Creativity and the eye for the “beautiful” was laid in my cradle. I then attended the school of design in Bern and Biel in the course of my education and then worked for a long time in the field of graphics. Since then I have taught myself everything about painting and illustrating. When painting I can switch off, forget everything that comes from the outside and dwell in my own world. To focus, to feel inside, for me like a meditation.
–Can you tell us about your work and, what inspires you when painting?
I work mainly with acrylic paints on canvas or paper. With my painting I capture the souls of animals. Animals are my main motifs also because many customer orders relate to it. Each animal is so unique, I love to bring the looks and fur colors of the animals on canvas. But I also often work with natural brushes, use the imprints of leaves, wood, flowers e.t.c to create images from them. I get the inspiration in the time I spend in nature. Nature is art in itself, it can be seen everywhere, you just have to open your eyes. Everything is connected, animals, people, minerals and the universe. Often images arise in my head while I walk, these visions I then try to project on the canvas.
–What do you do besides painting?
Among my hobbies I count the time I spend with my animals. Long walks in the forest together with my dog Suki, on the pasture together with my 3 goats or the time with my bearded dragon. I have been practicing yoga for over 6 years which I would also call hobbies.
–Do you have any projects that you plan to realize?
Currently I am working on a children’s book, but my head is full of ideas that I would like to implement all at once. I am in preparations for several exhibitions. One revolves around art in connection with the topic of climate and animal death, in another I will continue to pursue the theme with nature prints as forms.
-Finally, what would you like to say to art lovers?
It always pleases me when people fall in love with my pictures or, as has happened, my buyers are emotionally moved. Sometimes they tell me stories that they associate with a picture. For an artist, there is nothing more beautiful than when a customer falls in love with a painting at first sight. These moments in connection with art lovers are the most precious to me.

-Hallo Jana. Wir möchten Sie kennenlernen. Können Sie uns von Ihnen erzählen?
Zuerst möchte ich mich herzlich bedanken für die Einladung zu diesem Interview. Mein Name ist Jana Schafroth ich bin eine Schweizer Künstlerin, wohnhaft in der Nähe von Zürich. Ich male, illustriere und leite Malevents draussen in der Natur auf der Weide mit Alpakas
-Wann und wie haben Sie zum malen angefangen?
Ich zeichne und male seit ich ein Kind bin. Kreativität und der Blick für das „Schöne“ wurde mir in die Wiege gelegt. Ich habe dann im Zuge meiner Ausbildung die Schule für Gestaltung in Bern und Biel besucht und danach lange im Bereich der Grafik gearbeitet. Seither habe ich mir alles rund ums malen und illustrieren selbst beigebracht. Beim malen kann ich abschalten, alles was von Aussen kommt vergessen und in meiner eigenen Welt verweilen. Sich zu fokussieren, hinein zu fühlen, für mich wie eine Meditation.
-Können Sie uns von Ihrer Arbeiten bzw. Ihre Künsten erzählen? Was inspiriert Sie meistens beim malen?
Ich arbeite vorwiegend mit Acrylfarben auf Leinwand oder Papier. Mit meiner Malerei fange ich die Seelen der Tiere ein. Tiere sind meine Hauptmotive auch weil viele Kundenaufträge sich darauf beziehen. Jedes Tier ist so einzigartig, ich liebe es die Blicke und Fellfarben der Tiere auf Leinwand zu bringen. Ich arbeite aber auch häufig mit Naturpinsel, verwende die Abdrücke von Blätter, Holz, Blumen e.t.c um Bilder daraus entstehen zu lassen. Die Inspirationen hole ich in der Zeit, in der ich mich in der Natur aufhalte. Die Natur ist Kunst für sich, überall ist sie zu sehen, man muss nur die Augen öffnen. Alles ist miteinander verbunden, Tiere, Menschen, Mineralien und das Universum. Oft entstehen Bilder in meinen Kopf während ich spaziere, diese Visionen versuche ich dann auf die Leinwand zu projizieren.
-Was sind Ihre Beschäftigungen in der Zeitraum wenn Sie nicht malen? Irgendwelche Hobbys?
Zu meinen Hobbys zähle ich die Zeit, die ich mit meinen Tieren verbringe. Lange Spaziergänge im Wald zusammen mit meinem Hund Suki, auf der Weide zusammen mit meinen 3 Ziegen oder die Zeit mit meiner Bartagame. Ich praktiziere seit über 6 Jahren Yoga was ich auch als Hobbys bezeichnen würde.
-Haben Sie irgendwelche Konzepte im Künstlerischen Bereich die Sie demnächst verwirklichen wollen?
Zur Zeit arbeite ich an einem Kinderbuch, mein Kopf ist jedoch voller Ideen die ich am liebsten alle gleichzeitig umsetzen möchte. Ich bin in den Vorbereitungen für mehrere Ausstellungen. Die eine dreht sich um die Kunst im Zusammenhang mit dem Thema Klima und Tiersterben, bei einer anderen werde ich das Thema mit Naturabdrücken als Formen weiter verfolgen.
-Zum Schluss möchten wir noch wissen was Sie an die Kunstliebhaber/innen ausrichten möchten?
Es freut mich immer wieder, wenn Menschen sich in meine Bilder verlieben oder wie es auch schon passiert ist, meine Käufer emotional ergriffen sind. Manchmal erzählen sie mir Geschichten, die sie mit einem Bild verknüpfen. Für einen Künstler gibt es nichts schöneres, als wenn sich ein Kunde auf den ersten Blick in ein Bild verliebt. Diese Augenblicke im Zusammenhang mit Kunstliebhaber/innen sind mir die wertvollsten.
