They solved Munch’s method with infrared scanning

Examining Madonna by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, known for his work “The Scream”, experts found some sketches.

Examining Edvard Munch’s painting Madonna with infrared light, experts found sketches in the painting. Authorities found that Munch had trouble making the painting and had previously drawn it in different ways. It is seen in the drawings that Munch had difficulty in drawing the woman, who was depicted naked with one hand behind her head and the other behind her back.

While this drawing is on display at the Norwegian National Museum, Vibeke Waallann Hansen, the museum’s curator, said, “This is really exciting. You see how Munch works. Drawings on the lower layers, we see that in his first attempts, Munch preferred a more traditional stance like those drawn in portraits at the time, but later completed the work with an innovative drawing.”

Although the painting seems simple, it was noted that some lines and sketches could be seen when you look closely, and it is noted that this becomes even more evident with infrared light. Hansen says, “Munch’s paintings are usually simple. The scream is about anxiety. Madonna is also about women, love and eroticism. But the more you look at this painting, the more you feel. This painting, along with other Munch paintings, was donated to the museum in 1909 and became an icon. “You can’t tell if it was done in 1890 or 1990,” he said.

After the first Madonna maintenance, it will be exhibited in the new building of the Norwegian National Museum, which will open in Oslo in June next year. This museum, which will become the largest art museum in the Nordic countries, will feature many iconic works, including the original Munch’s Scream.
