The mysterious note found at the 2,150th meter of Bulak Cave in Safranbolu, Turkey’s 4th largest cave, created surprise. It was learned that the note, dated 1845 and written in Arabic letters, read, “Are you two there? We are looking for you here.”
Nature researchers conducted research and examination in Bulak Cave, Turkey’s 4th largest cave. Researching the cave in Safranbolu to investigate the mysterious world of the underground and reveal the natural beauties, the team made a difficult journey an average of 650 meters below the ground surface.

The team consisting of Cemil Belder, Cemal Özbek, Ümit Çolakoğlu and Bahadır Öztürk recorded the difficult journey that lasted for 10 hours, second by second, with helmet cameras. During the exploration, it was determined that the average temperature in the cave was 15 degrees, and the humidity of the surface was 70 per cent.
While examining the cave, Cemil Belder, who had difficulties from time to time, saw a note written in Arabic letters on the wall at the 2,150th meter of the cave. He photographed and recorded the note he saw. In the note dated 1261 (1845 Gregorian), translated into Turkish with the help of a calligrapher, “Are you two there? We are looking for (you) here. It was learned that he wrote “Feyzi – İzzet”.

Nature Researcher Cemil Belder said, “The most striking detail in my cave research was the Ottoman letters written on the right wall of the cave at 2,150 meters. When I saw the articles, at first glance, I couldn’t understand what it was. I then photographed it to investigate what was written in the note. I asked for support from Calligrapher Osama Yakisir, the attendant of Türbealtı Mosque in Safranbolu Historical Bazaar. In the note ‘1261 (1845 Gregorian) Are you two there? We are looking for (you) here. He said he wrote ‘Feyzi-İzzet’. I was briefly shocked by the translation I received from the calligrapher. It is impossible not to be surprised how they got here in those years.”
