Little Chat With Contemporary Music Composer & Pianist KIANN

In recent months, Kiann held two concerts in Turkey. His music has a magical effect that draws listeners into it at once, where everyone finds something of themselves in it, embraces it as if they knew it before, and internalises it too easily.

Kiann’s completely authentic approach to music and his innovative style of combining and connecting genres is unique music that can be described as a kind of fusion. Of course, this involves the artist internalising all the music he listened to from the ’80s onwards and blending it perfectly with the classical music training he received. Turkish music lovers who met Kiann’s unspeakable music in past months quickly embraced his music. And this is universal music once again, but this time it will meet Istanbul music lovers. With support and contributions of the Austrian Cultural Office, Kiann will perform two concerts in Istanbul in February.

The first of these concerts will take place on 10 February in the hall of Kadikoy Municipality “Yeldegirmeni Sanat,” with contributions from Austrian Cultural Office, Kam Management and Dermoskin. For his audiance, Kiann will perform the pieces that he chose from his latest album in collaboration with Ana Percevic, a Serbian cellist who also continues her art life in Austria. Kiann will perform his second concert at the Austrian Cultural Office on 13 February.

As Gazete Sanat we have chance to make an interview with Kiann in Vienna, before his 2nd Turkiye visit.

Who is Kiann ? Can you tell us your early years, how did you start your music career?

Kiann is simply someone, who’s always looking for new music. He tries to write pieces which are coming from his life experiences, from within his soul.

He is a composer and pianist, he is a curious soul, with a child inside who is learning day by day, but not through the classical knowledge but through doing and trying. Finding your own formula to write music is like driving your own made car. It’s not the safest option but it makes fun most and it makes you proud.

Early years have been a combination of lonely childhood and passion to play the piano as it felt like a refuge. Some place to make your very own reality. A reality you create with some extra magic. I started with the Classical music theory and didn’t wait to start writing my own music and to learn things the way I found most attracting. The music career came along some time when I realised that the music I make is not only interesting for me but for people around me and for anyone who ever listened to it. It accompanies my all my life and I didn’t aim for it. It was somehow inevitable not to let anyone listen to the music that I first wrote for me.

You are a composer &  a pianist, can you tell us about your music?

My music is a very versatile combination of genres that makes it hard for me to categorise. It’s sometimes ‘contemporary’ or ‘contemporary classical’, but it tends to get more modern and sometimes it’s crossover where I combine classical instruments with elements of modern and electronic music. I first write a new piece of music in its most beautiful form, a piano solo. How that piece of music evolves, is almost a mystery to me…

Are there any difficulties in being contemporary musicians then classical musicians?

If you, by classical musician mean classical performers and interpreters, I must say yes because as an interpreter you have a broad offer on engagement. But being a composer is always a privilege. You create something new, something that has not been there. It makes you unique. You become one of a kind. So it’s already a big plus that takes you out of the crowd.

In terms of being recognized as such artist in the society, I must say it takes lots of effort and time. If you are creating new music, especially if you come up with your own sound and arrangements, you must be ready to be declined for some long time. If you are ready to keep it rolling then people start believing in you. Good things need time to make. If you do it for yourself and for the passion that is burning inside of you, then you put up with all consequences.

This will be the second time in Turkey . What are your thoughts about our country? Do you have time to see around?

Yes it will be my second time. My first visit  and tour in Turkey was in November 2021. I fell in love with the beauty of your country, with the smile that people carry on their faces, the nature, the architecture and very much with the food culture in your country. I was lucky to have some time to get to see some places and to get to know and to make friends with people here. I think you have a marvellous piece of the planet and that you are doing a great job taking care of it and presenting it to the world. It is also great to see that your rich Turkish culture is open to other cultures and you are doing such a good job in terms of cultural exchanges by inviting international musicians and artists to Turkey.

I think you have new projects in very near future with Kam Management in Turkiye.  Can you tell us a little about your projects?

It seems that you are going to see me and to hear me for a very long time! I met so many interesting people and we are already working on a dozen of new and interesting projects to make reality. I have the best Management that works very hard And very closely with me to ensure all aspects of my art and music is met.

The projects are to be presented in early 2022 and you can be assured that they are going to be very innovative and we are coming with new music. Make sure you don’t miss them.
